Amarr Cable & Drum Replacement: The Atlanta Owner’s Guide

We replace Amarr garage door cables and cable drums throughout Atlanta, typically for $130 – $250 installed, and our trucks carry a range of Amarr-compatible drums and aircraft-grade cables so we can fix most failures in one visit. Most Atlanta homeowners discover the problem the same way: a loud snap, a door that suddenly hangs crooked, or a cable you spot dangling loose when you’re pulling into the driveway after work. The cable runs from the torsion assembly down through the track and anchors to the bottom bracket of your door. When it snaps or the drum it winds around fails, the door can’t lift evenly, and it usually won’t lift at all.

Which Amarr Models This Applies To

Amarr builds doors across several series, and the cable and drum setup varies by door weight, height, and spring configuration. The most common Atlanta installations we see are the Amarr Classica, Heritage, Stratford, and Olympus lines, along with commercial-grade Lincoln doors on some of the older Atlanta homes and carriage-house properties around Grant Park and Inman Park. Cables on residential Amarr doors are typically 1/8-inch or 3/32-inch aircraft cable, cut to a length that matches your door height, usually 7 or 8 feet. Drums on Amarr doors generally come in 4-inch and 6-inch diameters, and the drum’s taper must match the torsion spring wire size. Here’s the compatibility gotcha: Amarr doors with the same width but different spring systems will often use different drums, and a mismatched drum will wind the cable unevenly, wearing it out in months instead of years. When we arrive, we check the end bearing plate, measure the drum taper, and match the cable length to your exact door height before we loosen anything. If you’re looking at aftermarket parts versus OEM Amarr, honest take: for cables and drums, quality aftermarket components built to the same spec are perfectly reliable and often ship faster, but we keep genuine Amarr-spec parts on hand for the current production models. Doyle Garage Doors Atlanta is an independent service provider and not affiliated with Amarr, but we stock parts compatible with their full residential lineup.

Signs Your Amarr Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • A hanging or frayed cable. You can see this one from inside the garage. If the cable has visible rust blooms, kinked strands, or is hanging slack against the track when the door is up, it’s already failing. Overhead humidity and Georgia clay dust tend to accelerate cable wear in Atlanta garages.
  • One side of the door sits higher than the other. A cable that has stretched unevenly or slipped a wrap on the drum will pull one side of the door up faster. If your door looks crooked when it’s moving, stop using it and call us.
  • The door jerks or binds when opening. This often means the cable has jumped the drum groove and is wrapping over itself. Every cycle adds more friction damage, and you’ll hear a grinding or popping sound near the top of the track.
  • A loud snap followed by the door slamming to one side. That’s a cable letting go under tension. If it happens while the door is moving, the door can drop hard and damage the track or your car.
  • Visible wear grooves in the drum surface. Steel cables eventually carve shallow channels into aluminum drums. Once the groove is deep enough, the cable stops winding cleanly and starts binding.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Atlanta, Amarr cable and drum replacement runs $130 – $250 for the full job on a single door. The range depends on whether we’re replacing one cable or both, whether the drum needs to come out too, and whether we need to match a tapered drum for a heavier door. We always replace cables in pairs. If one side snapped, the other side has the same age and wear, and leaving it is inviting the same failure in a few months. Here’s what you get for the price: both cables matched to your door height, new drums if yours are grooved or cracked, a re-balance of the torsion spring so both sides lift evenly, and a written price handed to you before we start. No verbal estimates, no surprises after the work is done. Every repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If that cable or drum fails within 365 days of the repair, we come back and make it right at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself. Look at your cables when the door is closed. If they’re frayed, rusted, or not seated in the drum grooves, write down what you see. Check the drum surface for cracks or grooves. But here’s the line we draw, and you should too: the cable and drum sit on the same torsion assembly as the spring. That spring is under enormous tension, enough to cause serious injury if it releases. Replacing a cable means de-tensioning that spring, and it’s not a job for a YouTube tutorial. Aaron Teague has said it on job sites across Atlanta for years: a garage door isn’t a repair you learn on Saturday morning. The parts are inexpensive. The risk is in the tension. If your Amarr cable or drum is failing, call us at (229) 408-2364 and we’ll send a background-checked, uniformed technician with a name and photo in advance so you know exactly who’s on the way.
